Gatwick to Wetherby

A few words and thoughts after another interesting holiday.

Who knew Tunisia had so many remarkable Roman, Byzantine ruins and there are lots more we didn’t see. The mosaics in the Bardo Museum were quite incredible, room after room of perfect mosaic pictures depicting everyday life in Roman Times.

Through the dunes in the Sahara desert in a four wheel drive was quite exhilarating, if not a little scary. On the way back our drivers helped pull a car out of the sand, they might still be there if we hadn’t come by. The Sahara is the world’s largest desert and occupies one third of the African continent, amazing.

From the searing heat of the desert during the day to being woken the same night with huge hailstones hitting the window!

It seems so noticeable to see people smoking in restaurants, round the pool, in the street, in fact everywhere and that’s not just cigarettes but hookahs too.

Glad I’m not an Arab women as I would hate to have to cover up from head to toe in the swimming pool and the sea, though some may say I should!

Felt very safe everywhere and though the shopkeepers in the souks could be a little annoying they didn’t chase after you.  In fact a lady in our group got lost in the souk. She had no phone but did have our guide’s number. We thought we wouldn’t see her again and had been exchanged for camels. In truth she approached two local men and explained her situation. They phoned our guide and explained where she was and we went to collect her but no camels.

Date palms were everywhere and each tree produces between 70 – 100 kg of dates, the wood is used to make furniture and the leaves are used to make baskets and mats. Nothing is wasted.

The country now welcomes many tourists each year and has some fantastic  hotels situated on the beach with lots of facilities.  Prices are cheap and a three course meal with wine in a good restaurant is about £20-£25.

Lots to remember, least of all the intense heat!
